Esophagogastric surgery

This refers to surgeries involving the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach) and the stomach. These surgeries are often performed to treat conditions such as esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernias, and other disorders affecting the esophagus and stomach.

A common procedure is esophagectomy, which is the removal of part or all of the esophagus. This is often necessary in cases of esophageal cancer. The surgeon may also need to reconstruct the esophagus using part of the stomach or intestine.

For stomach cancer, a gastrectomy may be performed, in which part or all of the stomach is removed. In both cases, the surgeon reconnects the remaining digestive tract to allow food to pass through.

In cases of severe GERD caused by hiatal hernias, a procedure called fundoplication may be performed. This involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower end of the esophagus to strengthen the valve between the esophagus and the stomach, thereby preventing acid reflux.

These surgeries can be complex but are typically performed using minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic surgery. Recovery times may vary depending on the type of surgery, the patient’s overall health, and the underlying condition being treated.
