Liver Surgery
The liver is a vital organ that performs essential functions such as detoxifying metabolites, aiding digestion by producing bile, and storing nutrients. Liver surgery may be necessary for various reasons, including liver cancer, benign (non-cancerous) liver tumors, and certain chronic liver diseases. The most common type of liver surgery is the removal of a section of the liver, known as a hepatectomy.
Biliary Surgery
This includes surgeries on the gallbladder and bile ducts. The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver, and the bile ducts transport it to the small intestine to aid in digestion. Gallstones are the most common reason for biliary surgery. These are stones that can form in the gallbladder and cause pain, inflammation, and infection. The most common procedure for gallstones is a cholecystectomy, which is the removal of the gallbladder. It is a very common and safe procedure. Sometimes, surgeries are also performed on the bile ducts to remove blockages or cancers.
Pancreatic Surgery
The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach that produces enzymes to aid in digestion and hormones such as insulin. Pancreatic surgery is complex due to the organ’s location and the vital blood vessels nearby. Pancreatic surgeries are often performed for pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), and cysts or benign tumors in the pancreas. A common procedure is the Whipple procedure, which involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the gallbladder, and part of the bile duct. This surgery is complex and requires a highly specialized surgical team.
All of these surgeries carry risks and potential complications. These may include infection, bleeding, and leaks at the suture sites. Recovery times vary depending on the type and extent of the surgery and the patient’s overall health. Close monitoring after surgery is crucial to ensure proper healing and to address any complications in a timely manner.
It is important for patients to have a clear understanding of why surgery is recommended, what it involves, the risks, and the expected recovery process. And these procedures must be performed by highly trained specialists.
