Quirúrgica

Our history

In 1986, Drs. Joan Torralba and José María Raventós founded Quirúrgica, based on a new model—unique in the country—that combines the best of public healthcare (excellence and continuing education) with the best of private healthcare (efficiency and patient care that goes beyond the illness).

Since then, numerous professionals in general surgery, nursing, and physical therapy have joined our team.

We are currently a team of 19 surgeons practicing at some of Barcelona’s leading private hospitals. Guided by a commitment to excellence, we have grown steadily and now practice at Centro Médico Teknon, Hospital Universitari Dexeus, Hospital de Barcelona, CIMA, and Clínica Sagrada Familia.

After gaining our initial experience at the former Dexeus Clinic on Passeig de Bonanova, we undertook our first expansion in 1994, when we became the leading team at Centro Médico Teknon from the moment it opened, and we had also begun operating at Hospital de Barcelona. We accompanied the transformation of the Dexeus Clinic into the Dexeus University Hospital and its move to its current location in 2007. In 2017, we became partners with Sanitas Hospitals to manage the central General Surgery department at CIMA Hospital. And finally, in November 2020, we began operations at the Sagrada Familia Clinic.

As a result, in 2024 we conducted 14,041 visits across our various clinics, 3,648 scheduled surgeries, and 777 emergency procedures, for a total of 4,425.

Just for your information:

  • The top three procedures performed at our centers are hernia repairs, gallbladder surgeries, and thyroid surgeries.
  • The month with the most emergency room visits was October, with a total of 75 visits.
  • And the month with the fewest emergency room visits was August, with a total of 53 visits.
  • The main reason for visiting the emergency room is appendicitis.

In addition to our scheduled operating room and outpatient appointments, our 24/7 care, 365 days a year, ensures that our patients always have the support of our on-call team, which consists of two surgeons, one physician assistant, and one scrub nurse every day.

Our team is committed to providing unparalleled excellence in surgical care. With a passion for precision, a commitment to excellence, and a focus on delivering exceptional patient experiences, we are your trusted partners on the path to better health.

Mission, Vision, and Values

Mission

We treat the patient; we support the person.

Vision

We honor our mission

We treat the patient and support the individual. We provide excellent medical care and offer heartfelt support.

We are a benchmark for excellence and patient care, recognized by patients, leading clinics, and insurance providers alike

We have developed a range of resources, strategies, and systems that have enabled us to advance our profession and become a leader in the field of General Surgery.

Thanks to multidisciplinary, adequately staffed, and optimized teams

We work with multidisciplinary teams that combine top specialists and general practitioners. We operate using optimized processes and are able to reduce waiting lists.

We believe in a structure within the organization where the centers we work in are self-managed. A management team will be responsible for upholding QCA’s vision and strategy as a group.

Who lead in a "different" way, sharing leadership.

Working as a team, co-creating, and achieving a better work-life balance

We have established a foundation for change based on a "different" style of leadership (shared with the aim of co-creating our future). Based on trust and each individual’s responsibility for the tasks performed, which help us grow as a team.

We are a school of choice for young surgeons, thanks to our mentoring and our commitment to creating a space for them to grow

A team grounded in professional and personal excellence, capable of attracting talent. With a focus on teaching, collaboration with universities, and the ability to mentor other medical groups for the development and creation of new professional societies.

We are a cutting-edge team

We are committed to innovation and development, linking our vision for the future to the implementation of technological advancements that can bring greater quality, value, and visibility to our society.

That seeks to expand beyond Barcelona

We want to consolidate our presence in the hospitals where we already operate and become a leader in the region where we work, Catalonia, while also growing and building new teams both within and beyond our immediate geographic area.

Values

The patient is at the heart of our mission.

In our interactions with the people we care for: humanity, respect, and compassion.

In our service: responsibility, quality, innovation, and professional competence.

Fellowship & students

At Quirúrgica, we have always been committed to the academic training and professional development of our team, and we welcome undergraduate and graduate students as well as surgeons. As part of this commitment, for many years we have hosted medical students and surgeons from across the country and around the world, including Europe and other continents.

We tailor our training commitment to each individual who joins us, focusing on promoting research activities, updating university curricula, and/or specialization in specific areas of our surgical specialty. Additionally, we offer an ambitious undergraduate and graduate fellowship program.

Because we want to help you grow, and because every person who joins the Quirúrgica team helps us continue to grow.

Starting in 2025, we will launch a program of highly practical courses designed for surgeons seeking additional training.

These courses, together with our fellowship programs, make up the SURGICAL CLASSROOM.
