Colon and Rectal Surgery

Colon and rectal surgery, also known as colorectal surgery, is a specialized field of surgery focused on treating diseases and disorders affecting the colon (large intestine) and rectum. These organs play a fundamental role in digestion and the elimination of waste from the body.

Colon and Rectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a condition in which cancerous cells form in the colon or rectum. Surgery is the main treatment to remove the tumor. Depending on the size and location of the cancer, different procedures may be performed—most often using laparoscopic techniques—such as local resection to remove only the affected area, or colectomy to remove part of the colon or rectum. In advanced cases, a temporary or permanent colostomy may be required, in which an opening is created in the abdominal wall to allow waste elimination.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, causes chronic inflammation of the colon and rectum. Surgery is used when medical treatments fail to control symptoms or when serious complications arise. Procedures may include removing affected portions of the colon or rectum.

Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is the inflammation of small pouches (diverticula) in the wall of the colon. In severe or recurrent cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the affected section of the colon, sometimes with a temporary colostomy.

Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectum protrudes through the anus. Surgery may be required to correct this condition, typically by repairing the supporting tissues and strengthening the rectum.

Endometriosis

The presence of endometriosis nodules in various locations within the abdominal cavity, especially in the pelvic area, may require joint surgical intervention by a gynecologist together with our highly specialized surgeons.

It is essential to understand that colon and rectal surgery is often a necessary therapeutic approach to treat serious conditions and improve quality of life. However, each patient and situation is unique, so it is important to carefully discuss treatment options and risks with a colorectal surgeon.

In summary, colon and rectal surgery addresses a wide range of conditions affecting these organs, including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse, intestinal obstruction, and endometriosis. These surgical procedures aim to treat and resolve these conditions in order to restore health and normal digestive function.
