Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery

Hernia Surgery

A hernia is a protrusion of fat, peritoneum, or intestine through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. The most common types of hernias are inguinal (in the groin), umbilical (around the navel), and epigastric (just below the lower end of the sternum). Surgery is recommended to repair these hernias, especially if they are causing pain or other symptoms.

Hernia repair generally involves repositioning the protruding tissue and strengthening the weakened area using mesh and sutures. This can be done through open surgery, which involves a single, longer incision, or through laparoscopic surgery, which uses several small incisions and special instruments. Laparoscopic surgery generally offers a faster recovery and less postoperative pain.

Abdominal Wall Surgery

This type of surgery is more extensive and often involves repairing more widespread weaknesses or damage to the abdominal wall. These may be caused by recurrent hernias, previous surgeries (incision hernias), and abdominal wall lesions such as tumors. Procedures can vary widely depending on the specific problem, ranging from simple repairs to more complex reconstructions, including advanced laparoscopy.

Recovery from abdominal wall surgery can vary. It typically involves managing pain and avoiding strenuous physical activity. The goal is to allow the tissues to heal properly and prevent recurrence of the hernia or other complications.
