Breast surgery

Surgery is a key treatment option for many women (and men) diagnosed with breast cancer.

  • Purpose of the surgery: The primary goal of breast cancer surgery is to remove the cancer cells from the breast. Your surgeon will recommend an approach based on the size, stage, and location of the tumor, as well as your personal preferences and overall health..
  • Types of Surgery:
    • Lumpectomy: This procedure involves removing only the tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue. It is sometimes followed by radiation therapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells. The goal of a lumpectomy is to preserve the breast as much as possible.
    • Mastectomy: This surgery involves removing the entire breast. There are different types of mastectomies, and the extent of the surgery depends on the stage of the cancer and other factors. In some cases, it is possible to perform a skin-sparing mastectomy or a nipple-and-areola-sparing mastectomy, which preserves the breast skin and/or the nipple and areola for reconstructive surgery.
    • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Often performed in conjunction with breast cancer surgery, this procedure checks for the spread of cancer to the lymph nodes. It involves removing some of the sentinel lymph nodes (the first ones to which the cancer is likely to spread) for examination.
  • Recovery: Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery and your overall health. You may experience pain, swelling, and tenderness in the treated area. Your medical team will provide pain management strategies and instructions for post-operative care.
  • Reconstruction: If you undergo a mastectomy, you may want to consider breast reconstruction. This can be done at the same time as your mastectomy or at a later date. Reconstruction aims to restore the shape of the breast and can be performed using implants or tissue from other parts of your body..
  • Emotional Impact: Coping with breast cancer and undergoing surgery can be emotionally challenging. Feelings of anxiety, sadness, or concerns about body image are common. It is important to seek support from friends, family, or support groups. Professional counseling can also be helpful.

Making a Decision

It is essential to discuss all your options with your surgeon, including the benefits and risks, so you can make an informed decision.

Remember, every patient’s journey is unique, and advances in treatment mean that many women continue to lead fulfilling lives after breast cancer surgery.
