Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Bariatric and metabolic surgery is a specialized surgical approach for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic conditions. This type of surgery is performed when other weight loss methods have not been successful and excess weight has been determined to pose a significant health risk.

Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which a person accumulates excess body fat that can lead to a range of health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea. Bariatric procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass, reduce stomach capacity and alter nutrient absorption, leading to sustained weight loss.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is closely linked to obesity and is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. Some bariatric procedures, such as gastric bypass, can improve or even reverse type 2 diabetes by changing the way the body processes food.

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance, which increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Bariatric and metabolic surgery can help improve these risk factors by reducing body fat and enhancing insulin sensitivity.

In summary, bariatric and metabolic surgery is used to treat obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. These surgical procedures reduce the size of the stomach and/or alter nutrient absorption to promote weight loss and improve metabolic health. However, the decision to undergo this type of surgery should be made after a thorough evaluation by a specialized multidisciplinary medical team.
