Physical Therapy

Every surgical procedure carries a number of risks; the key is to identify, prevent, or minimize them. Quirúrgica provides patients with access to the best professionals working at the most prestigious clinics. However, preventing potential complications and improving recovery does not depend solely on us; we need the patient’s cooperation. To this end, at Quirúrgica, we have designed a Surgical Risk Prevention Program.

Our Prevention Program consists of four parts: preoperative physical therapy, vascular risk prevention, prevention of respiratory complications, and improvement of mobility.

Preoperative physical therapy

It consists of a series of personalized exercises and techniques designed to improve the patient’s physical condition, prevent vascular and respiratory complications, and enhance mobility. These techniques will also help prevent postoperative pain and promote a faster recovery.

Our physical therapist, Guillermo Camps, tailors the program to each patient based on the surgeon’s recommendations regarding the specifics of their procedure and individual risk factors.

Prevention of Vascular Risk

Vascular complications are possible following surgery. Immobility, the position in the operating room, the type of procedure, and other patient risk factors (obesity, varicose veins, advanced age, etc.) increase the risk of blood clots forming in the veins of the lower extremities and pulmonary embolism.

Physical therapy and, in some cases, the use of anticoagulant medication significantly reduce this risk.

Prevention of respiratory complications

General anesthesia and difficulty coughing or taking deep breaths due to postoperative pain can increase the risk of respiratory complications such as pneumonia or atelectasis.

During the physical therapy session, in addition to teaching the patient proper breathing and coughing techniques, we will provide a device (TRIFLO) so that the patient can perform the breathing exercises in their program both before and after the procedure.

Improved mobility

Getting a patient who has just undergone surgery moving quickly reduces risks and facilitates a faster recovery. Our physical therapist will teach the patient techniques to help them move, get out of bed, or stand up from a chair with less pain and without aggravating their wound. Therefore, the patient’s cooperation is very important; they play a key role in a speedy recovery.

Postoperative pain is largely due to stiffness and muscle spasms. Our team will provide personalized guidance to our patients on mobility exercises to relax the affected muscles.

With this program, we aim to ensure that every patient arrives at surgery in the best possible condition and that their postoperative recovery is as swift as possible.
