Ostomy Unit

In intestinal surgery, when it is not possible to perform a suture, an ostomy must be created.

When it is necessary to remove a segment of the intestine, colon, or rectum, it is not always possible to perform an anastomosis or to do so correctly to restore continuity of the digestive tract. Fortunately, the techniques we use allow us to achieve this continuity in most cases, but in some patients, an ostomy is necessary. It may be temporary and closed within a few weeks, but in some patients, it must be permanent.

Our Ostomy Unit is unique in this area

At Quirúrgica, we have an Ostomy Unit coordinated by Mireia Carrasquilla. Some patients who have undergone surgery at other facilities are referred to our unit by surgeons outside our team or by urologists (for urostomies); our nursing team cares for them in coordination with these specialists.

The Surgical Department team cares for the patient in every aspect. The attending surgeon decides whether the patient needs a stoma, and the stoma therapist supports them throughout the adaptation process, addressing any concerns related to wearing a pouch.

Fear of the unknown and the feeling of not being in control of a new situation can cause distress. That is why it is essential to have a team of professionals who help us learn and manage a new situation in an easy and straightforward way. And, of course, a professional and trustworthy team that makes us feel accompanied and supported at all times. At the Surgical Unit, patients can count on this throughout the entire process.
