Hematology Unit
Specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of hematological diseases, the Hematology Unit manages conditions affecting the blood and hematopoietic organs, including both malignant and non-malignant disorders.
Hematologic malignancies include leukemias, lymphomas, myelodysplastic syndromes, chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, and other conditions such as monoclonal gammopathies. The unit also treats non-malignant blood disorders, including anemias, platelet disorders, and coagulation abnormalities.
The unit is staffed by specialists from the Barcelona Oncology Institute (IOB) with extensive experience in the management of hematological diseases and the application of personalized treatments. This approach enables comprehensive patient care, with management tailored to the clinical and biological characteristics of each case.

Diagnosis:
The diagnosis of hematological diseases is based on a comprehensive clinical evaluation and detailed analysis of the blood, bone marrow, and their biological characteristics.
Initially, the patient undergoes a clinical assessment together with baseline laboratory studies.
The main diagnostic procedures include:
Hematological Studies
- Complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry tests
- Evaluation of specific hematological parameters
Bone Marrow Assessment
- Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
- Morphological analysis of blood and bone marrow cells
Immunophenotyping
- Flow cytometry analysis
Genetic and Molecular Testing
- Assessment of cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities
- Identification of relevant biomarkers
These investigations allow specialists to establish an accurate diagnosis, classify the disease, and determine the most appropriate therapeutic strategy for each patient.
Treatments:
The treatment of hematologic malignancies is based on an individualized approach that takes into account the type of disease, its stage, and the clinical characteristics of each patient.
The main treatment options include:
- Chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Targeted therapies, including monoclonal antibodies
Treatment selection is guided by information obtained from hematological diagnosis, staging studies, and the analysis of biomarkers and genetic alterations, enabling the choice of more precise and effective therapeutic strategies.
In certain cases, patient management is coordinated with other specialties involved in the patient's care, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the disease.
