Genitourinary Oncology Unit
Specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary cancers, the unit manages malignancies affecting the urinary tract and genitourinary system, including prostate, kidney, bladder, and urinary tract cancers.
The management of these tumors requires close collaboration among multiple specialties, with multidisciplinary evaluation playing a key role in defining the most appropriate therapeutic strategy for each patient.
The unit is staffed by specialists from the Barcelona Oncology Institute (IOB) with extensive experience in the management of genitourinary malignancies and the application of personalized treatment approaches. This model enables comprehensive patient care, with treatment tailored to the clinical and biological characteristics of each disease.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of genitourinary cancers is based on a comprehensive clinical evaluation, histological confirmation of the tumor, and assessment of its extent and biological characteristics.
Initially, patients undergo a clinical assessment, including evaluation of symptoms and initial imaging studies.
The main diagnostic procedures include:
Imaging Studies
- Computed Tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in selected cases
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan to assess the extent of the disease
Tumor-Specific Diagnostic Procedures
- Urological and endoscopic examinations according to tumor location
- Organ-specific diagnostic techniques tailored to the affected site
Diagnostic Confirmation
- Biopsy with histopathological examination
Molecular Analysis
- Assessment of biomarkers and genetic alterations of the tumor when indicated
Together, these investigations allow specialists to establish the diagnosis, determine the stage of the disease, and define the most appropriate therapeutic strategy for each patient.
Treatments
The treatment of genitourinary cancers is based on an individualized approach that takes into account the type of tumor, its stage, and the clinical characteristics of each patient.
The main treatment options include:
- Systemic therapies, including chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies
- Radiation therapy
- Surgery when indicated, particularly in localized disease
Treatment decisions are guided by information obtained from histological diagnosis, imaging studies, and the analysis of biomarkers and molecular alterations, allowing for the selection of more precise and effective therapeutic strategies.
In selected cases, patient management is coordinated with other specialties involved in the patient's care, with the aim of defining the optimal treatment strategy and ensuring a comprehensive approach to the disease.
Research and Clinical Trials
The unit’s specialists actively participate in national and international clinical trials in the field of genitourinary cancers, serving as investigators in studies focused on the development of new therapeutic strategies.
When appropriate, patients may be evaluated for inclusion in active clinical trials at other institutions, facilitating access to innovative treatments and emerging therapeutic options.
